Colombian Delegates Tour Former MILF Camp, Learn from Philippine Peace Process

Barira, Maguindanao del Norte — Delegations from Colombia recently concluded a significant field visit to Camp Abubakar, a former stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), to gain firsthand insights into the Philippines’ peace and normalization efforts. The visit, held on 7 August 2025, served as an international exchange to share knowledge on post-conflict peacebuilding and the decommissioning process.

Led by Ambassador H.E. Edgar Rodrigo Rojas Garavito, the delegation observed the profound transformation of the camp from a former conflict zone into a community actively pursuing peace and development. The centerpiece of the visit was an on-site dialogue with the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) at the Secured Arms Storage Area (SASA). Here, the Colombian representatives delved into the operational details of the decommissioning process, its monitoring mechanisms, and the challenges faced.

The exchange provided a valuable learning opportunity for both nations. For Colombia, which has its own history of peace processes, the visit offered practical, real-world lessons from the Bangsamoro experience. For the Philippines, the visit underscored the success of its multi-stakeholder approach to peacebuilding and its growing role as a model for other countries navigating similar challenges. The visit not only strengthened bilateral ties but also highlighted the shared global commitment to transforming conflict into sustainable peace. #MAM
