IDB Coordinated with BARMM-READi in the Conduct of DRRM Training for Staff

Cotabato City – On June 13-14, 2024, the IDB in collaboration with BARMM-READi conducted a Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) training for its staff in Cotabato City. This training was organized in observance of the Philippine National Disaster Resilience Month in July 2024, aiming to equip IDB staff with essential skills and knowledge for disaster preparedness and response. The importance of this training lies in its potential to significantly enhance the safety and resilience of the workplace, particularly in the staff themselves among their homes, and the BARMM region prone to various natural hazards.

The training covered several critical areas, starting with an understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their connection to disaster risk management. It then delved into the four pillars of DRRM: prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response, and rehabilitation and recovery. Participants learned about strategies to prevent and minimize the impact of disasters, the importance of preparedness, effective response actions, and steps for rehabilitation and recovery post-disaster. Specific focus was given to the major disasters in the BARMM region and the associated hazards and risks.

As a result of the training, the IDB has proposed to form a Disaster Core Group, integrating it with the existing Health and Safety Assistance Team and Fire Prevention Committee. This group will lead the DRRM efforts within the organization. Additionally, quarterly earthquake and fire drills will be proposed to ensure that disaster preparedness becomes a habitual practice among the staff. These measures are crucial steps toward building a safer and more resilient workplace, ensuring that IDB is well-prepared to handle any future disasters efficiently.
