IDB and Berghof Foundation Strengthen Cooperation for the Bangsamoro Peace Process

 
 

Cotabato City, Philippines – On 15 November 2024, the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) welcomed a delegation from the Berghof Foundation to discuss the progress of the Bangsamoro peace process, particularly the decommissioning of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants. The Berghof Foundation, an independent non-governmental organization specializing in conflict transformation and peacebuilding, works to support communities in conflict in their pursuit of sustainable peace.

The meeting addressed critical aspects of the decommissioning process, including updates on the current status, challenges related to delays, and the criteria for combatant inclusion. Special attention was given to ensuring the inclusion of female combatants, reflecting the shared commitment to an inclusive approach. Discussions also covered the socio-economic assistance packages provided to decommissioned combatants and how these are integral to their successful reintegration into civilian life.

Both parties also examined the potential impact of the upcoming elections on the peace process, acknowledging the challenges and opportunities these may bring to the ongoing efforts for stability and development in the Bangsamoro.

The IDB reaffirmed its dedication to advancing the decommissioning process and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Bangsamoro peace process. Meanwhile, the Berghof Foundation expressed its unwavering support, offering its expertise in conflict resolution and peacebuilding to strengthen efforts. Both parties recognized the need for sustained dialogue and cooperation to overcome obstacles and achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
