IDB Kickoff 2024: Ready for the Final Phase of Decommissioning

Samal Island, Philippines – The Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) recently completed a comprehensive two-day planning workshop and engaging team-building exercise in preparation for the crucial commencement of Phase 4 decommissioning. This activity was held from 6 to 8 February 2024 at the Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort in Samal Island, Davao del Norte with the theme "From Completion to Commencement: Reflecting on Decommissioning towards Normalization." The workshop drew together a diverse group of local and international IDB staff from varying sections of the headquarters, as well as representatives from the Verification and Monitoring Assistance Team of both the Government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in constructive discussions, reviewing, and refining organizational strategies while reaffirming the core values and mission of the IDB. Notably, the event provided a platform for IDB sections to showcase significant achievements from 2023 and proposals for future programs, projects, and activities for 2024.

Commitment to Mandate

In his address, IDB Chief of Staff Tom Hjertholm reaffirmed the organization's unwavering commitment to overseeing the decommissioning process with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. This commitment underscores the IDB's dedication to fostering an enabling environment for the Bangsamoro, facilitating the transition of MILF combatants to civilian life. Hjertholm emphasized that the IDB is continually refining its processes based on valuable lessons learned from previous decommissioning phases aligning with internationally accepted standards and norms.

Readiness for Action

Deputy Chief of Staff Commander Zouhdy Abdul Razak, in his closing remarks, reiterated the IDB's unwavering readiness to the decommissioning process under the guidance of the Peace Implementing Panels. He highlighted on the IDB's comprehensive preparedness, meticulous planning, and unwavering dedication to the decommissioning process.

As the IDB embarks on the final phase of decommissioning, it stands firm in its commitment to the peace process and the well-being of the Bangsamoro people. Through steadfast dedication and collaboration, the IDB remains at the forefront of efforts to build a future characterized by lasting peace and prosperity.
